Irish university closed for two days due to hacking into IT systems

Irish university MTU Cork has decided to close all four campuses for two days and cancel all classes due to an intrusion into its IT systems. The attack took place last weekend and would have been detected at an early stage. The university gives no details about what kind of attack it is exactly and how it could have happened, except that it is a significant “IT breach”.

The measure to close all campuses and cancel classes from yesterday and today was taken for the safety of student and staff data, the university said in a statement. The Irish media is speculating about a ransomware attack, also citing recent attacks on vulnerable VMware ESXi systems. Many ransomware attacks take place on weekends, but the university has not confirmed any such attack.
